Brown, Kenneth R.

BROWN, KENNETH R., of Coyle Ave., Rumford, died Friday, December 12, 2008 at home. He was the husband of Carol Nelson. They had been married 18 years. Mr. Brown was born in Pawtucket, the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Cummings) Brown. He was a meat cutter at BJ's Wholesale club in South Attleboro for many years. Ken enjoyed Golf, watching football and long walks on the beach. He was particulary fond of time spent with his family and friends. Besides his wife he leaves his mother in law Theresa Nelson, his brother in laws, John Nelson and Fred Britland, his sister in Law Cheryl Britland, his nieces, Heather and Bethany Britland and his loving dog, Chi Chi. Mr. Brown was the Son in law of the late John Nelson the brother of the late Donald and John Nelson, Elizabeth, Helen, Theresa, Hope, Shirley, Eleanor, Beverly, and Elaine. CAMBIO, MARIE E. (SIMONELLI), of Providence, died Tuesday. She was the wife of the late Donald U. Cambio. They had been married for 35 years. Born in Providence and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Vincent and Theresa (Rossi) Simonelli. Ms. Cambio worked in the business office of the Providence Journal for over 20 years before retiring in 1987. She is survived by a son, Donald A. Cambio of Warwick. Her funeral will be held MONDAY at 9:00 A.M. from the A. TARRO & SONS Funeral Home, 425 Broadway, Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in St. Peter & Paul Cathedral, Cathedral Square, Providence. Deasy, Robert L.

DEASY, ROBERT L., 77, of Gibbs Street Rumford, the longest serving Professor at Providence College, died peacefully on December 11, 2008 at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Dolores J. (Peckham) Deasy and the late Louise Ann (Gibbs) Deasy. Born in Rumford on October 13, 1931, a son of the late John P. and Helen (McCoart) Deasy, he was a lifelong resident of Rumford. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son; Robert Deasy of East Providence, a daughter; Leeann Dias and her husband Gregory of Rumford, Katy Krupa and her husband Jeff of Charlotte, NC and Maribeth Knox of Riverside, five grandchildren; Courtney, Robert and Ali Hayes, Michael and Sean Krupa, a brother; John Deasy and his wife Ann of Bridgewater, MA, a sister-in-law; Rosalind Deasy of Riverside, nine nephews and one niece. He was the brother of the late Richard M. Deasy. After attending local public schools in the Rumford area, he graduated from St. Raphael Academy in 1949 and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Providence College in 1953, where he holds the distinction of being the first student to graduate with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He served with distinction in the U.S. Army and received his Masters Degree from Fordham University. Professor Deasy began his 52 year teaching career at Providence College in 1956, during which time he had the honor and privilege of teaching over 20,000 students before retiring in May of this year. During his tenure at PC, he was a member of the first Providence College Faculty Senate, directed the Humanities Department from 1965-1987, received the Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Faculty Service in 1983 and was inducted into the Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society in 1991. He was the chairmen of the History Department from 1992-1994 and was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 2006. He was actively involved in St. Margaret's Parish serving as an usher for many years. His funeral will be held on Tuesday December 16 from the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNER AL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 8:30 am with a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial in St. Margaret Church, Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford at 10 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Mount St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are Monday 2-4, 7-9 pm. Flowers are respectfully omitted. KEHR, DORIS W., 85, of Mulhearn Drive, died peacefully at home on Thursday with her daughter. She was the beloved wife of the late Herbert L. Kehr to whom at the time of his death in 2006 she had been married to for 62 years. Born in Providence she was a daughter of the late Elmer S. and Mildred W. (Harris) Mathewson. For several years she worked as a bookkeeper and statistical typist for the late William J. Kane, CPA. She is survived by her daughter Karen L. (McGinnes) Joovelegian and her husband George of West Greenwich, her sister Eleanor L. Lynch of Coventry and her adopted son, Pete. A private graveside service will be held by her family. Lacroix, Odile H. (Gourd)

LACROIX, ODILE H. (GOURD), 93, formerly of Lexington Avenue, West Warwick, died on Friday, December 12, at Riverview Healthcare Community in Coventry. She was the wife of the late Adrien Autotte and Emile L. Lacroix. Born in West Warwick, a daughter of the late Alexandre and Hattie (Fontaine) Gourd, she was a life-long West Warwick resident. Mrs. Lacroix worked as a waitress for many years at the Log Cabin Restaurant, Newberry's, and Arctic News, before becoming co-owner of Mac's Bowl with her husband Emile in 1957. Together they ran the business until Emile's death in 1965. Odile continued the successful management of the bowling alley until age 78, when she relinquished operation to her son Roger. She continued to work 'full time' until age 87. Mrs. Lacroix was a communicant of St. John's parish and a member of its choir for many years. She was also a long-time member of the Daughters of Isabella, Nina Circle #67. She was an avid Red Sox fan. Mrs. Lacroix is survived by her son, Roger Lacroix and his wife Deborah, of Coventry; her daughter, Judith Archambault, and her husband Lionel, of Narragansett; five grandchildren, Sean Davies, Mark Davies, Gary Davies, Daniel Lacroix, and Allison Levesque; two step-grandchildren, Eric and Curt Archambault; and six great-grandchildren, Emma, Jayne, Sam, Madelyn and Annalise Davies, and Connor Archambault. She was pre-deceased by her five brothers, Henri Danis, Raphael, Clovis, Gideon, and Normand Gourd, and two sisters, Rachel Mayette and Isabelle White. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 16, at 9 a.m. from the Potvin & Cotter Funeral Home, 45 Curson Street, West Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Christ the King Church, Legris Avenue, West Warwick. MARRA, ROSEMARIE (DeLUISE), 81, of Providence, passed away on December 5, 2008. She was the beloved wife of 48 years of Michael Marra and daughter of the late John and Livia (Sanita) DeLuise. Mrs. Marra was employed at the Providence Fire/Police Headquarters as the Secretary to several Fire Marshalls working in the Fire Prevention Office, retiring in 1995. She was lovingly know as 'Ma Barker.' She was a longtime communicant of St. Ann Church, participating in many parish activities along with her husband, Michael. She was a 1945 graduate of Hope High School. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Anthony J. She was the former wife of the late Anthony A. Martone Sr. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Maria (Caruso) Martino. Viola was a courageous woman with an invincible will to live; she was a cancer survivor many times in her life. Viola was a member and volunteer at the Cranston Senior Center for many years. She was the devoted mother of Pat Lupo of Johnston, Sandra Rondina of Middletown, Marie Martone of Wickford, Bernice Mignanelli of North Scituate, Diane DiNobile and Antoinette Lamontagne both of Johnston, Veronica Napolitano of Hopkinton, and the late Wendy Smith and Anthony A. Martone Jr. She was the grandmother of sixteen and the great grandmother of four. Born in Holyoke, MA, a daughter of the late Frank H. and Hilda (Gray) Mayoh, she had lived in Pawtucket for 40 years before moving to Rumford 7 years ago. Miss Mayoh was an administrative assistant for Graphic Communications, Inc., East Providence for 10 years before retiring. She was a graduate of Pawtucket High School and Bryant College. She was a past president of the Women's Advertising Club of Rhode Island. A member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Pawtucket, she was a member of the Altar Guild, the ECW, the Women's Guild, a Sunday School teacher and was active in its Thrift Shop. She is survived by one sister, Helen F. Greenhalgh of Bristol; two grandnephews, Daniel Hey of Warwick and James Hey of Attleboro, MA. She was the aunt and godmother of the late Lynne Hey and the sister of the late James E. Mayoh. McCLURE, DOROTHY (BROWN), 90, formerly of Warwick, died peacefully in her sleep at Linn Health Care Center, East Providence, RI on Thursday, December 11, 2008. She was born March 21, 1918 in Cranston, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (Rogers) Brown. Dorothy was a 1937 graduate of Aldrich High School and enjoyed many reunions with her classmates over the years. She volunteered with the Red Cross during WWII and with Kent County Memorial Hospital in the early years of its development. She retired from General Electric in 1983 and for the next twenty years volunteered as a tax counselor for the elderly. In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by brothers James E. Alexander, Jr. and Frederick G. Brown; nephews Frederick A. and John H. Brown, and niece Catherine Brown Souza. She is survived by nieces Eleanor Worthington of Huntsville, AL, Dorothy Harris of Wakefield, Elizabeth Graham of Greenville, Francine Rossignol of Warwick, Susan Weber of Clinton, MD, Patricia Brown of Coventry and nephews Frederick J. Brown of Rumford, Alexander Brown, III of Providence and numerous great-nieces and nephews. RICHARD, DONALD C. JR., 72, of Aldrich Road died Friday, December 12, 2008 at Kent County Memorial Hospital, Warwick. He was the husband of Jean M. (Pizzuti) Richard and the husband of the late Ann C. J. (Pickhover) Richard. Born in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Donald C. and Ella (Derry) Richard, he had lived in Pawtucket for 26 years before moving to Glocester 23 years ago. Mr. Richard was a machinist and later an electronic assembler for Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Co., North Kingstown for 32 years, retiring in 1998. An active mason, he was a past master of Jenks Lodge #24, F. & A.M., Pawtucket, the secretary of Daylight Lodge #48, F. & A.M., Cranston and was the Grand Lecturer for the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons for the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. He was an honorary member of Mount Moriah Lodge #8, F. & A.M., Lincoln. He served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard during peacetime. He also served on the Board of Wardens for the Harmony Fire Department for several years. He was a communicant of St. Philip's Church, Greenville. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Catherine L. 'Cathy' Richard of Warwick; two sons, Donald C. 'Doni' Richard III of Warwick and Peter L. Richard of Mt. Juliet, TN; two stepdaughters, Patricia Ciarlo and Susan Staniorski, both of Scituate; one stepson, Richard Springob of Grafton, MA; one brother, Robert Richard of Guilford, CT; ten grandchildren; two great granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. CENCI, MARTHA C. (URSILLO), 96, of Providence, passed away peacefully on Thursday. She was the beloved wife of the late Leonard F. Cenci and daughter of the late Pasquale and Theresa (DeCesare) Ursillo. Mrs. Cenci was a Seamstress for the State of RI, working at the Children's Center before her retirement. Previously she had worked at Pauline's Dress Shop, formerly of Providence. Martha was a former communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, and a member of the St. Jude Society at St. Agnes Church. She is survived by her devoted twin daughters, Barbara E. and Elaine T. Cenci; 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Cenci. SHIELDS, CHARLES W., JR., 91, died on December 5th at home in Johnston. Married for 50 years to Jacqueline Smith, he is survived by his daughters, Martha Stoebling, of Middletown, NY, and Marianne Shields, of Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Johnston, three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a great-great grandson. Retired Director of the RI Council on Highway Safety, Charles was an avid pilot, boater and photographer. He was a flight instructor for the US Navy during WWII and later managed two airports in Maine. Returning to his native Rhode Island, he continued to fly into his mid-80s and remained an active member of the Rhode Island Pilots Association. An enthusiastic boater and photographer, Charles created a historic photographic collection of the Americas Cup races in Newport over more than two decades. An avid lifelong sports fan, especially the NY Yankees and Giants, he was active in the Saint Thomas Parish C.Y.O. as the director of the Sports Committee and basketball coach, for several years. He also played in several softball leagues during his younger years, and was also known for his beautiful singing voice. HAWKINS, ROBERTA M., 67, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Rhode Island Hospital. Roberta was the wife of the late Leon E. Hawkins; daughter of the late Robert Banford and Marie (Vezenia) Boyd. Roberta Hawkins was the founder and Executive Director of the Alliance for Better Long Term Care, Inc., a not-for-profit private agency dedicated to the mission of improving the quality of life and health care of residents of long term care facilities, assisted living facilities and home health care and hospice patients. Roberta Hawkins led, developed, and expanded the agency for 30 years, providing advocacy and assistance to consumers of long term care, their families and their caregivers. Under her direction, the Alliance was designated in 1998 as the R. I. Ombudsman for Long Term Care by the R. I. Dept. of Elderly Affairs. In that capacity, Alliance staff and trained volunteers advocate for elders and disabled persons in long term care who are victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment or financial exploitation. She was a frequent caller and visitor to state agencies and state officials and appeared at countless hearings and meetings to voice her concerns and to advocate for improvements to the quality of care and the quality of life for long term care patients. She promoted and supported legislative and regulatory improvements for health care and was an implacable foe of any attempt to disadvantage people needing long term care. There was no one too high for her to engage in her campaigns. She was vocal and tireless on behalf of her constituents, and she made time to give her personal attention to countless families, patients, caregivers and care providers. During her career, she served on scores of policy and advisory boards, including the R.I. Long Term Care Coordinating Council and the R. I. Disability Law Center and participated in hundreds of work groups to protect and improve long term care programs and services. She was recognized by Attorney General Patrick Lynch for her work in the Hillside Health Center scandal; by former Lt. Governor Fogarty for her outstanding efforts to promote residents' rights; by Quality Partners of RI for lifetime achievement, and others too numerous to mention. She was the beloved mother of Cynthia Redman and the late Robin Klees; devoted grandmother of Melissa Klees and Robert Klees; sister of Susan Puleo, Jane Seal, and Stephen Beltrami. She also leaves her sister-in-law Rosemarie Barre; godchildren Katherine Bourgeault, Stephen Beltrami, Jr., and Lisa Cotoia; caregiver Richard Allen; and her many friends. HUMMEL, ANNE C., 83 of Old Saybrook, CT, formerly of Barrington, died Dec. 5th at home. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Hummel, president of the former Barrington College. They were married 53 years. She was born in Asheville, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Richard Austin and Annie Reaux Jones Childs. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1947 she worked as a lay minister with college students throughout the South for Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship. She co-authored with her husband numerous Bible study guides for Inter Varsity Press. She later worked with special needs children at Elm Park Daycare Center in Worcester in the 1970s and 1980s and most recently was active in Grace Episcopal Church in Old Saybrook, where she had lived the past 14 years. She leaves four children: Elizabeth Hummel of Richmond, VA; Charles E. Hummel III of Southington, CT; Richard Hummel of Worcester and James Hummel of Barrington; two brothers, Wylie Childs of California and Richard Childs Jr. of Ohio; and five grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Brevard Childs. Her funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 336 Main Street, Old Saybrook.

McNULTY, CONSUELO (VILLANUEVA), 70, of Pine River Drive, passed away peacefully Tuesday at Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Karl J. McNulty, Jr. who passed away on November 2, 2008. Born in Lima, Peru, she was the beloved daughter of Maria Villanueva of North Kingstown and the late Manuel Villanueva. Mrs. McNulty received a BA in Education from New Mexico State University and her Masters in Education from the University of Oregon. She was a Spanish Teacher at North Kingstown High School for over 20 years and led numerous trips abroad with students. She also taught Adult Education courses at night when they were offered by the town. After her retirement she remained at the school in various capacities. She will be remembered for her optimism, her inimitable laugh and her love of life. She was a longtime member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 707 having served as Flotilla commander and Flotilla officer. She was also a member of the Greenwich Bay Sail & Power Squadron. She was an active communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church. Besides her mother, she leaves two step-sons, Kevin and Rodman McNulty; four step-daughters, Lynn Varone, Dawn Jordan, Kristen De Rosa and Elizabeth Butterworth; two brothers, Manuel and Rafael Villanueva; a sister Elvira Echegaray; 13 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren. She was the step-mother of the late Denise Stewart. She received her Bachelors Degree from RI College and her Masters Degree from URI in Library Sciences, and her CAD of Science from RI College. She was an avid conservationist and musician and having an interest in cars, she was the first female to complete the automotive course at RI College. She was a competitive swimmer for the RI Aquatic Assoc., was an avid tennis fan, and collected stuffed bears. Besides her mother, she is survived by her brother, Thomas S. Munzer of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Pearce was born in Westerly on June 8, 1928, the daughter of the late Salvatore and Hazel (Main) Ballata. Her husband, Henry L. Pearce, died in 1995. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Henry "Rusty" and Patty Pearce of Westerly, her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Denise Pearce of Westerly, her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dan Burke of Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Jaime, Kerri, Tomi-Lee, Brandon, Justin, Traci and Bomina; one great-grandchild, Hannah; and three sisters, Josephine Clary of Bradford, Kathleen Windsor of Ashaway and Patricia Coon of Ashaway. Mary's family and friends will always remember her cheerful smile, wonderful sense of humor, and willingness to help others. The Westerly Public Library proclaimed Dec. 3, 2008, as "Mary Pearce Day".
