CENCI, MARTHA C. (URSILLO), 96, of Providence, passed away peacefully on Thursday. She was the beloved wife of the late Leonard F. Cenci and daughter of the late Pasquale and Theresa (DeCesare) Ursillo. Mrs. Cenci was a Seamstress for the State of RI, working at the Children's Center before her retirement. Previously she had worked at Pauline's Dress Shop, formerly of Providence. Martha was a former communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, and a member of the St. Jude Society at St. Agnes Church. She is survived by her devoted twin daughters, Barbara E. and Elaine T. Cenci; 4 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and her daughter-in-law, Mary Cenci. Mrs. Cenci was the mother of the late Ralph V. Cenci, and sister of the late Thomas, Domenic, Concetta Ursillo, Mary Conca, and Margaret Saccoccia. CLARK, ARTHUR B., Jr., 83, of St. Laurent Parkway, passed away Wednesday December 10, 2008 in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of the late Emma L. (O'Brien) Clark. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Arthur B. and Ellen (Booth) Clark. Mr. Clark was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II and was a graduate of Bryant College. He leaves two daughters; Julie A. Milligan of Pawtucket, Linda H. Potter of Seekonk, Ma.; three sons, Richard A. Clark of Taunton, Ma., Brian P. Clark of Northfield, Vt., Daniel P. Clark of Plainville, Ma.; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Marion Cobb and John Clark. (Masciarotti) Hill and the son of the late Ernest & Lucy (Petrarca) Hill. Anthony, a lifelong resident of West Warwick, was the former owner of Anthony's Italia Cucina Restaurant in Johnston and Anthony's Welcome Cafe in Providence. Anthony's life passion was being with his family & friends, golfing, & boating. He was the brother of Helen M. Arlia of West Warwick, and Robert (and Debra) Hill of S.C. ISOM, GINA M., 41, of Hyatt St., Providence and formerly of Pawtucket, died Tuesday December 9, 2008 as a result of a traffic accident in Providence. Ms. Isom was born in Pawtucket, the daughter of James Harold Isom of East Providence and the late Margaret Mary (Phelan) Isom. She had worked at Stressless Cleaning for many years. Besides her father she is survived by her longtime companion Walter Waite of Pawtucket a son, Rachon Waite of Providence, eight sisters, and eight brothers. MILNER, MARILYN (PEDDER), 64, of Gurnee, IL, passed away December 6, 2008 at Midwest Palliative and Hospice Care Center in Skokie, IL. She was born in Providence, RI, to the late George and Frances Pedder. She is survived by her husband of 43 and a half years, Robert Milner; her daughters Denise Swynenberg of Liberty Hill, TX, and Elise Carman of Raymore, MO; her grandchildren Andrew and Kathryn Swynenberg and Ian and Kyle Carman; and her brother, Donald Pedder of Freemont, OH. Marilyn moved to Gurnee in 1985 and worked at the Chicago Medical School, A Safe Place, and Catholic Charities in various administrative positions. Memorial visitation is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2008 at 6-8 PM Wednesday at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 Cemetery Rd., Gurnee, IL. Mary I. (Ballata) Pearce, 80, of Dixon Street, Westerly, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, Dec. 10, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Pearce was born in Westerly on June 8, 1928, the daughter of the late Salvatore and Hazel (Main) Ballata. Her husband, Henry L. Pearce, died in 1995. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Henry "Rusty" and Patty Pearce of Westerly, her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Denise Pearce of Westerly, her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dan Burke of Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Jaime, Kerri, Tomi-Lee, Brandon, Justin, Traci and Bomina; one great-grandchild, Hannah; and three sisters, Josephine Clary of Bradford, Kathleen Windsor of Ashaway and Patricia Coon of Ashaway. Mary's family and friends will always remember her cheerful smile, wonderful sense of humor, and willingness to help others. The Westerly Public Library proclaimed Dec. 3, 2008, as "Mary Pearce Day". She was a loyal and beloved library volunteer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 7 Church St., Bradford. REDINGTON, HARRIETTE (PHILLIPS), 92, a resident of Greenwich Farms and formerly of Narragansett, RI, Greenwich, CT and Stamford, CT died Thursday, December 4, 2008 in Kent Hospital with her family at her side. Harriette is predeceased by her first husband Thomas R. Fisher, Jr., her second husband Edgar H. Redington, Jr. and her sisters, Barbara Phillips Shove and Elizabeth Phillips Howland She is survived by her sister, Jean Phillips McLeod of Essex, CT, her children, Harriette Leyla Anderson of Narragansett, RI, Mary Molly Hawthorne of Norton MA, Thomas R.F. Redington of Southport, CT, Rowley Rey Redington of Montclair, NJ, Nancy Ayre of Woodbury, CT and Deborah Imse of Bow, NH. Also surviving her are her devoted sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, her sixteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Shields Jr., Charles W.

SHIELDS, CHARLES W., JR., 91, died on December 5th at home in Johnston. Married for 50 years to Jacqueline Smith, he is survived by his daughters, Martha Stoebling, of Middletown, NY, and Marianne Shields, of Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Johnston, three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and a great-great grandson. Retired Director of the RI Council on Highway Safety, Charles was an avid pilot, boater and photographer. He was a flight instructor for the US Navy during WWII and later managed two airports in Maine. Returning to his native Rhode Island, he continued to fly into his mid-80s and remained an active member of the Rhode Island Pilots Association. An enthusiastic boater and photographer, Charles created a historic photographic collection of the Americas Cup races in Newport over more than two decades. BOVE, EVELYN (GOLATO) R., 79 of Randall Avenue, Warwick, died Tuesday, December 9, 2008 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Ralph Bove for 59 years. Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Adeline (Cicchetti) Golato. She lived in Warwick for most of her life. Evelyn was a homemaker and avid cook and baker. The Christmas season was her favorite time of year and she took great pride in baking her Italian cookies and preparing the traditional Christmas Eve dinner for her family and friends. She cherished her family and took pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides her husband Ralph, she leaves her sons Robert Bove and his wife Doris, Richard Bove and his wife Jane, Dennis Bove and his wife Patricia, and her beloved daughter Janet Verdi, all of Warwick, seven granddaughters, Gina Bove, Lisa Bove-Baldelli, Jessica Bove, Jennifer Bove, Kaite Bove-Furney, Stephanie Bove, and Rochelle Verdi, one grandson, Dennis Bove, Jr. of FL, and two great grandchildren. DiPIPPO, IDA I. 82, of Hazael Street, Providence, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Cortland Place, Smithfield. She was the former wife of the late Adolph L. DiPippo, Sr. Born in Providence; she was a daughter of the late Gregory and Mary (Marchetti) Sargino. Ms. DiPippo was employed by the Catholic Diocese of Providence for many years. She also worked for the former Junction Human Service Corporation of Providence in the Adolescent Behavior Program before retiring in 1994. She is survived by her loving children, Adolph L. DiPippo, Jr. and his wife Marilyn of Cranston, Esther M. Major and her husband Michael of Cranston, Paul DiPippo and his wife Elizabeth of North Scituate, Robert DiPippo and his wife Roxanne of Cranston, Pasquale DiPippo and his wife Denise of Cranston and Gregory DiPippo of Providence. FREZZA, THOMAS A., 70, of Tyndall Avenue, died Tuesday at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Alice M. (Bowles) Frezza. They were in their 50th year of marriage. Born in Providence, a son of the late Anthony J. and Genevieve E. (Swift) Frezza, he lived in Providence most of his life. Mr. Frezza was a supervisor for G Tech for ten years, and most recently worked as a parking lot supervisor for the Churchill & Banks Company for the past two years. An avid lifelong sports fan, especially the NY Yankees and Giants, he was active in the Saint Thomas Parish C.Y.O. as the director of the Sports Committee and basketball coach, for several years. He also played in several softball leagues during his younger years, and was also known for his beautiful singing voice. Besides his wife Alice, he leaves his loving daughters, Jean Marie Frezza, Teresa M. Berube, and Mary A. Frezza; his brother, Walter F. Frezza, as well as other siblings, and two loving granddaughters, Katherine and Valerie Desautel. The funeral will be held Saturday, at 8:45 am, from the Russell J. HAWKINS, ROBERTA M., 67, passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Rhode Island Hospital. Roberta was the wife of the late Leon E. Hawkins; daughter of the late Robert Banford and Marie (Vezenia) Boyd. Roberta Hawkins was the founder and Executive Director of the Alliance for Better Long Term Care, Inc., a not-for-profit private agency dedicated to the mission of improving the quality of life and health care of residents of long term care facilities, assisted living facilities and home health care and hospice patients. Roberta Hawkins led, developed, and expanded the agency for 30 years, providing advocacy and assistance to consumers of long term care, their families and their caregivers. Under her direction, the Alliance was designated in 1998 as the R. I. Ombudsman for Long Term Care by the R. I. Dept. of Elderly Affairs. In that capacity, Alliance staff and trained volunteers advocate for elders and disabled persons in long term care who are victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment or financial exploitation. She was a frequent caller and visitor to state agencies and state officials and appeared at countless hearings and meetings to voice her concerns and to advocate for improvements to the quality of care and the quality of life for long term care patients. She promoted and supported legislative and regulatory improvements for health care and was an implacable foe of any attempt to disadvantage people needing long term care. There was no one too high for her to engage in her campaigns. She was vocal and tireless on behalf of her constituents, and she made time to give her personal attention to countless families, patients, caregivers and care providers. During her career, she served on scores of policy and advisory boards, including the R.I. Long Term Care Coordinating Council and the R. I. Disability Law Center and participated in hundreds of work groups to protect and improve long term care programs and services. She was recognized by Attorney General Patrick Lynch for her work in the Hillside Health Center scandal; by former Lt. Governor Fogarty for her outstanding efforts to promote residents' rights; by Quality Partners of RI for lifetime achievement, and others too numerous to mention. She was the beloved mother of Cynthia Redman and the late Robin Klees; devoted grandmother of Melissa Klees and Robert Klees; sister of Susan Puleo, Jane Seal, and Stephen Beltrami. She also leaves her sister-in-law Rosemarie Barre; godchildren Katherine Bourgeault, Stephen Beltrami, Jr., and Lisa Cotoia; caregiver Richard Allen; and her many friends. HUMMEL, ANNE C., 83 of Old Saybrook, CT, formerly of Barrington, died Dec. 5th at home. She was the wife of the late Charles E. Hummel, president of the former Barrington College. They were married 53 years. She was born in Asheville, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Richard Austin and Annie Reaux Jones Childs. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1947 she worked as a lay minister with college students throughout the South for Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship. She co-authored with her husband numerous Bible study guides for Inter Varsity Press. She later worked with special needs children at Elm Park Daycare Center in Worcester in the 1970s and 1980s and most recently was active in Grace Episcopal Church in Old Saybrook, where she had lived the past 14 years. She leaves four children: Elizabeth Hummel of Richmond, VA; Charles E. Hummel III of Southington, CT; Richard Hummel of Worcester and James Hummel of Barrington; two brothers, Wylie Childs of California and Richard Childs Jr. of Ohio; and five grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Brevard Childs. Her funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 336 Main Street, Old Saybrook.

McNULTY, CONSUELO (VILLANUEVA), 70, of Pine River Drive, passed away peacefully Tuesday at Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Karl J. McNulty, Jr. who passed away on November 2, 2008. Born in Lima, Peru, she was the beloved daughter of Maria Villanueva of North Kingstown and the late Manuel Villanueva. Mrs. McNulty received a BA in Education from New Mexico State University and her Masters in Education from the University of Oregon. She was a Spanish Teacher at North Kingstown High School for over 20 years and led numerous trips abroad with students. She also taught Adult Education courses at night when they were offered by the town. After her retirement she remained at the school in various capacities. She will be remembered for her optimism, her inimitable laugh and her love of life. She was a longtime member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 707 having served as Flotilla commander and Flotilla officer. She was also a member of the Greenwich Bay Sail & Power Squadron. She was an active communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church. Besides her mother, she leaves two step-sons, Kevin and Rodman McNulty; four step-daughters, Lynn Varone, Dawn Jordan, Kristen De Rosa and Elizabeth Butterworth; two brothers, Manuel and Rafael Villanueva; a sister Elvira Echegaray; 13 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren. She was the step-mother of the late Denise Stewart. Mary was an RN who loved her work. She did private nursing at the Miriam Hospital and The Jane Brown Hospital. She was also a school nurse at Rhode Island College and the Smithfield Public Schools. She and her late husband were active members of The Smith Applebee House in Smithfield and former members of Central Congregational Church in Providence. Mary's remains will be returned to Oceanside, California. A Memorial Service will be planned at a later date.

(AUCONE), 75 of DePinedo St., passed away peacefully Sunday, December 7, 2008 surrounded by her loving family at the Philip Hulitar Home and Hospice Center after a 1 1/2 year courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of James V. Caputo. They were happily married for 55 years. Born in Providence, she was the devoted daughter of the late Ernesto and Flavia (Balasco) Aucone. Mrs. Caputo was a volunteer for over 30 years at the Memorial Hospital. She had a lively personality, enjoying life and loving people. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed bible study. DeSANO, JOHN A., ESQ., 78, of Fireside Drive in Barrington, passed away peacefully Monday morning at home. He was the devoted husband of Adelina 'Lena' (Martinuzzi) DeSano of 54 beautiful years. Born in Providence he was the son of the late Albert & Madeline (DelSanto) DeSano. Mr. DeSano was an alumus of Brown University and Boston University Law School, he practiced law in Providence for more than 50 Years. He was an active member of the Rhode Island Bar Association from which he received many probono awards. Mr. DeSano was a Veteran of the Korean War and communicant of St. Alexander Parish in Warren where he was a lector and eucharistic minister for many years. Besides his loving wife he is survived by a son John A. DeSano of Warren; three daughters Paula M. DeSano of Bristol, Carol A. DeSano of Glocester and Sandra M. Pezzullo of Barrington; a brother Anthony R. DeSano, Sr. of North Providence; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. DUFFELL, KENNETH, 100, of Old Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland, and formerly of Bergeron Street, Seekonk, died Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Emerald Bay Manor, Cumberland. He was the beloved husband for 61 years of the late Catherine T. (Cahalan) Duffell. Born in Cumberland, July 1, 1908, a son of the late James and Mary (Irvine) Duffell, he had lived in Seekonk for 53 years before moving to Cumberland 6 years ago. Mr. Duffell was an accountant for the former Potter & Johnson Company, Pawtucket and later worked for Crown Metro before his retirement. He celebrated his 100th birthday on July 5 surrounded by his family and friends at the Agawam Hunt Club, East Providence. He attended Bryant & Stratton Business School. Mr. Duffell served on the Seekonk School Committee in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a member and vestryman of the former St. Martin's Episcopal Church, Pawtucket. He coached several youth sports teams in Seekonk and served as treasurer of the Pop Warner League and the Babe Ruth League. He was a 50-year member of the former Unity Lodge #34, F. & A.M., Cumberland, now St. John's Lodge #1, F. & A.M., Providence. Mr. Duffell served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II attached to the 5th Army Air Corps Base Unit at Barksdale Field in Louisiana. He is survived by two daughters, Carol E. Masuck of Seekonk, MA and Kathy A. McCarthy of Pleasanton, CA; two sons, David K. Duffell of Lincoln and Paul J. Duffell of Norfolk, MA; five grandchildren, Michael Masuck, and Kerri, Andrew, Brian and Laura Duffell; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Norman, William, James, Raymond and Robert Duffell, and Emily Brown, Gladys Leach, Louise Allen and Violet MacManus. DUFFIN, THOMAS L. II, 81, of Hilltop Place, New London, NH, formerly of Warwick, RI, died peacefully at home on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008. A retired advertising manager of The Providence Journal, he was the son of the late Grace (deRuitter) and Thomas L. Duffin of Warwick, RI. Mr. Duffin was employed by The Providence Journal for 32 years and had been a member of numerous professional advertising associations in RI and New England. He was the beloved husband of Eleanor (Mackin) Duffin. Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his four children, Susan Duffin of Stone Mountain, GA, T. NEWTON, HENRY A. JR., 87, of Warwick, RI passed away on Sunday, December 7th. He was the husband to his beloved wife, the late Eva (Dyer) Newton whom he became one with on February 3, 1945. Born in Cranston, R.I., he was the son of the late Wallie (Nanig) Newton. During WWII he served his country in the U.S. Army stationed on the Aleutian Islands. He was a police officer serving on the Warwick Police Department while working a second job in heating and air conditioning. After leaving the Police Department he pursued his career as Sales and Service Manager of Eastern Coal & Oil Co. in Providence. When he was 55 he and his wife began their own business, Newton Oil Co. until he retired at age 70. Mr. Newton belonged to the RI Police Chiefs Association; he was a founding member of the Warwick Elks Lodge 2196. He also helped build the F.O.P Lodge #7 and was a member there for a number of years. His love of family, friends and traveling resulted in a very active, accomplished and rewarding life. He is survived by his children Robert Newton, Henry Newton III, Judy Jarbeau and Patricia Noel, his 6 grandchildren Raymond, Trevor, Joseph, Henry IV, Jennifer, Sarah, and his 6 great-grandchildren Justin, Amanda, Ashley, Jessica, Emily and Lily. PACHECO, GILBERT M., 83, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Emily G. (Joaquin) Pacheco to whom he was married for 59 years. He was born in East Providence a son of the late Manuel M. and Maria (Martin) Pacheco. Mr. Pacheco was a produce department manager for the A & P and Almacs Supermarkets for 48 years before retiring. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a past Treasurer, President and Executive Board Member of the Rehoboth Senior Citizens Club. Besides his wife, he leaves one daughter, Denise P. Wilkinson; two sons, Wayne G. Pacheco and Stephen J. Pacheco; one sister, Bella Sheets; one brother, Manuel M. Pacheco; seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He was the brother of the late Mary Powers. Smyth, James J.

SMYTH, JAMES J., 88, of North Shore Street, Warwick, died on Sunday, December 7, 2008 at the West Shore Health Center in Warwick. He was the husband of Mary E. (Jackman) Smyth. Born in Liverpool, England, a son of the late John J. and Eliza J. (Crampton) Smyth, he lived in Warwick since 1951. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Smyth was employed as a toolmaker for for J.I. Manufacturing in Providence before retiring in 1986. He was previously employed with E.A. Adams in Providence. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists. Mr. Smyth was a long-time skater, and a member of the Rhody Oldies in Pawtucket. He was a former coach with the Warwick Junior Hockey League. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, William F. Smyth of Cranston; two daughters, Christine M. Casas and Patricia A. Greenwood, both of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a sister, Eileen M. Hopkins of Johnston; and three grandchildren, Sophie Smyth, Chloe Casas, and Lucas Greenwood. He was the brother of the late John J. Smyth, Jr. and Patrick A. Smyth. His funeral will be held on Friday, December 12, at 8:30 a.m. from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Rita Church, 722 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick. Visiting hours are Thursday 4-7 p.m. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter. Szydlowski, Margaret B.

SZYDLOWSKI, MARGARET B., 91, of Tremont St., a former owner and operator of the Old Wilcox Tavern in Charlestown, RI died Friday at the LifeCare Center of Attleboro. She was the beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Szydlowski. Survivors include a son: Stephen C. Szydlowski and his wife Jacklynn Lantry of Rehoboth; a sister: Charlotte R. Bliss of Rehoboth; and four grandchildren: Aichun, Jack, Lucas and Sophia Szydlowski. Tessaglia, Lynn Jeanne (Lithgow)

TESSAGLIA, LYNN JEANNE (LITHGOW), passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 6, 2008. She was the beloved wife of Armand S. Tessaglia. Born in Wilmington, DE, she was the daughter of Dolores R. (Angelus) Wilson and the late Theodore T. Lithgow, and the stepdaughter of Daniel E. Wilson. Lynn graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School, Overland Park, KS and attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. She was an accomplished diver and won numerous Blue Ribbons for excellence on the three-meter board. She was an administrative assistant in the law office of Stephen T. O'Neill for 12 years and most recently a customer service representative for Citizens Bank. Besides her husband of 23 years, her mother and her stepfather, she is survived by two sons, James R. Tessaglia and Edward R. Tessaglia; her brother, Theodore D. Lithgow, PhD and his wife Karen and her late father's wife, Sarah. Her funeral will be held Thursday at 9 AM from the Maceroni Funeral Home, 1381 Smith St., North Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Our Lady of Grace Church, George Waterman Rd., Johnston. Trottier, Ruth M.

TROTTIER, RUTH M., 82, formerly of North Providence, died Sunday at Golden Crest Nursing Centre, North Providence. She was the wife of Francis W. Trottier. Born in Boston, Ma. a daughter of the late Cecil and Stella (Allen) Devereaux. Besides North Providence, she also lived in Lincoln and Central Falls. Mrs. Trottier was an assembler at Texas Instruments for twenty years retiring in 1986. She was also the President of Apollo Oil Company. Ruth was a choir member at St. Matthew and Holy Trinity Church, Central Falls, she was a Eucharistic Minister and CCD Teacher at Holy Trinity Church, also she was a lifeguard at the Central Falls Community Center, Central Falls and also was a swim instructor for the children at the Center. She was Treasurer of the Retirees of Texas Instruments and a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary #306, Central Falls. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Donna L. Piche and Robin M. Ryfa, both of Lincoln; two sons, Raymond F. Trottier of Lincoln and David B. Trottier of Cranston; one sister, Elizabeth Swanfeldt of Winthrop, Ma.; one brother, Raymond Devereaux of Medford, Ma.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Lee, Regis, Robert and Allen Devereaux. Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the BELLOWS-FALSO FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Rd., Lincoln, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthew Church, Dexter St., Central Falls, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.
